Our Sixth Form
The Royal School offers a diverse and vibrant Sixth Form experience. Not only do our students achieve excellent A Level results in the most rigorous, facilitating academic subjects, but the requirement for them to take on roles of responsibility alongside the arrival of new faces in Year 12 bring an added dimension to Sixth Form life.
Most of our existing GCSE students stay with us to study A Levels, but we are also delighted to welcome students joining us from other schools in the region as well as Sixth Form boarders from overseas in the European Union.
A Level students are attracted to the Royal for several reasons. We combine a specialism in the STEM subjects of Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths with a broad range of A-Level subjects and students do particularly well in the traditional facilitating subjects required by Russell Group universities. The average class size is just 15, allowing everyone to receive the individual attention they deserve, and resulting in strong, positive relationships forming among peers and between students and teaching staff.
High academic achievement is only part of the story. Universities and employers are increasingly drawn to applicants who can demonstrate leadership, determination, resilience and flair. The Royal School excels in this style of ‘leadership education’ providing students with ample scope to thrive in cultural activities, competitive sports, and entrepreneurial endeavours, as well opportunities to travel and make a valid contribution to the wider community.
Every Sixth Former is expected to play an integral part in school life – be it through our house system, by mentoring younger pupils, or by getting involved in charitable and community-minded activities. It’s a big ask for any teenager, especially when they are required to study hard in all subjects, but it is these high expectations that set us apart from other Sixth Form providers in preparing students for a bright and prosperous future and it has been evidenced that universities and employers are looking for rather more than GCSE and A level grades.
What we can offer you
The majority of A Level subjects taught at the Royal School are offered as an AS qualification in Year 12, followed by an A2 qualification in Year 13.Most of our students choose to study four subjects in Year 12 and carry on with three of these in Year 13. Each subject has five hours lesson time timetabled per week in Year 12 and another five hours per week in Year 13. Students are expected to spend at least the equivalent time working independently as background reading and individual research are vital for achieving high grades at A Level. We also offer some supervised study periods in Year 12 to encourage early adoption of effective work habits and to manage workloads with tutors and subject teachers.
External examinations for AS and A2 take place each year during May and June. The results for these are published in August.
The Sixth Form at the Royal provides a broad but mainly academic A Level programme with particular support for facilitating subjects. The standard entry requirement is six A*-C grades at GCSE and it is an expectation that students achieve a grade B or above in any subject they choose to study for A Level. There is, however, a flexible entry requirement for existing pupils who are unable to reach this desired level as we can continue to support their progress in our caring and inclusive Sixth Form community.
Details of each A Level course with an outline of what is entailed can be found in our current Sixth Form prospectus, found on our website.
